All Vocations: Eligibility and Unlock Routes

Research checked October 9, 2026 · 6 min read

Dragon's Dogma 2's established base-game roster has ten vocations, with Fighter, Archer, Thief and Mage available as starting choices. Pawns can also use Warrior and Sorcerer, while Mystic Spearhand, Magick Archer, Trickster and Warfarer are Arisen-only. Unlock a class through its associated guild, NPC or quest route, and check maister teachings separately because obtaining a vocation does not automatically grant every skill.

Starting vocations

Fighter, Archer, Thief and Mage are the initial choices. They provide different ways to begin exploring combat: frontline fighting, ranged physical attacks, close-range damage and supportive magic. Choose the role you want to play first rather than treating the opening selection as an irreversible ranking decision.

Your starting vocation and your Main Pawn's role should make sense together. If you choose a ranged role, consider who will cover the frontline; if you focus on direct damage, consider how the party will obtain support. You can change vocation later through a guild, so the first choice does not need to solve every encounter in the campaign.

Warrior and Sorcerer

Warrior and Sorcerer are later options available to both the Arisen and pawns. The researched unlock route is Vocation Frustration, involving the required weapons from Trevo Mine. Keep the quest objective and its required weapon types in view rather than assuming that merely visiting a guild makes every later class available.

These vocations answer different party needs once unlocked. Warrior offers a heavier frontline approach, while Sorcerer supplies offensive magic. Their availability to pawns also makes them relevant when you adjust party composition, unlike the special vocations that only the player character can adopt.

Mystic Spearhand through Sigurd

Mystic Spearhand unlocks by speaking with Sigurd about his fighting style. A common early encounter occurs around the Melve dragon attack, and Harve provides another place to check if that opportunity has passed. Finding a duospear does not, by itself, complete the class-unlock conversation.

The vocation combines duospear attacks with magick utility and belongs to the Arisen-only group. Its Wild Furie maister teaching is a separate consideration from the initial unlock. Use the Mystic Spearhand guide when you need the distinction between meeting Sigurd and following the later teaching route.

Magick Archer through the escort quest

Magick Archer unlocks through the Gautstafr and Cliodhna route on Agamen Volcanic Island. Complete Put a Spring in Thy Step, including the assistance and escort steps, and check the follow-up conversation. Possessing a magick bow is not a substitute for finishing the unlock route.

The vocation supplies ranged magick and can only be used by the Arisen. The southern journey can be dangerous for a new character, so prepare before pursuing early access. The Magick Archer guide covers the journey, the escort and the separate teaching reward without inventing a mandatory player level.

Trickster at the Reverent Shrine

Meet Luz at the Reverent Shrine for the Trickster unlock route. This is another Arisen-only choice and should not be included in a list of classes that a Main Pawn can adopt. The class uses a censer, so its equipment requirements differ from the starting weapon roles.

Treat the NPC encounter, the equipment and the skills as connected but distinct checks. Unlocking the vocation makes it available as a choice, while using it effectively still requires a suitable setup. If your immediate goal is finding Seeker's Tokens, the researched Detection augment is also relevant to that collection task.

Warfarer and The Sotted Sage

Lamond's The Sotted Sage provides the Warfarer route, with three Newt Liqueurs supplied as part of the researched requirement. Warfarer offers broader equipment flexibility than the ordinary single-weapon roles. It remains Arisen-only, so you cannot solve a pawn-composition problem by assigning that class to a companion.

Equipment flexibility introduces more setup decisions rather than one automatically best loadout. Consider what you actually want to combine before planning around the class. Keep the unlock requirement separate from any maister teaching or later build recommendation, because class access alone does not establish that every desired skill is already available.

Changing vocation and checking equipment

Change vocation through a guild and reassess equipment for the new choice. A weapon or armor piece that suited the previous class may not be compatible with the next one. Check the actual vocation indicators before spending resources on upgrades intended for your new setup.

Skill choices and maister teachings also deserve a separate review. The current update context differs from older guides that assumed the original number of weapon-skill slots. Use the installed game's options rather than forcing a launch-era layout onto a newer character setup.

Choose between an Arisen build and a pawn role

The best-vocation guide compares player choices by playstyle rather than offering an unsupported universal winner. The pawn-vocation guide focuses on the roles the party needs. Those questions overlap, but their eligible class lists are different.

Start with the role you want to play, then fill the gaps through your Main Pawn and hired companions. Follow the correct unlock route for a class you want to try and check its equipment before committing resources. This gives the ten-vocation roster a practical order: choose, unlock, equip and then refine the skills suited to your party.

Common questions

Which choices can my Main Pawn use? The researched eligible roster is Fighter, Archer, Thief, Mage, Warrior and Sorcerer. The four special Arisen-only vocations should not be included in a pawn build plan. Choose a companion role from the eligible group and use the player character for a special class you want to explore.

Do class access and a maister teaching arrive together? Unlocking a vocation and obtaining its maister teaching are distinct objectives. Review the NPC route and any later reward conversation before assuming every associated skill is available. This is particularly useful when the class can already be selected but a build guide refers to a teaching you have not obtained.

What should I check after changing vocation? Review compatible weapons and armor, then inspect the skills currently available for the new setup. A retained item from the previous class is not automatically usable by the new one. Choose the equipment for the role you are actually playing rather than spend upgrade resources solely because another vocation used it successfully.
