Quest Planning: Main, Optional, Timed and Missable Content
Research checked October 9, 2026 · 7 min read
Use a Dragon's Dogma 2 quest checklist to separate main-story progression, optional chains, timed rescues and endgame objectives. Prioritize active rescues such as Prey for the Pack, and review unfinished local quests before major story transitions. Each chain has its own prerequisites and consequences, so a blanket rule that every quest ends at Feast of Deception is not a reliable planning shortcut.
Main-story tasks through Brant
Brant's Vernworth investigations form the early main-story hub. They help establish what the campaign requires next, but they are not a complete list of every optional objective available nearby. Keep a critical-path entry distinct from side content discovered while traveling to the same destination.
Use the main-story walkthrough when the question is how to advance the campaign. Use this index when the question is what to prioritize alongside that route. Separating those purposes prevents a checklist from becoming a repeated main-story sequence that hides urgent rescues or optional unlocks between larger milestones.
Timed rescues deserve immediate attention
Hourglass-marked objectives deserve attention, and Prey for the Pack is a researched example where delay can change the result. Morris asks for Rodge's rescue at Checkpoint Rest Town, leading to Putrid Cave and a return escort. If you want the successful rescue, act promptly rather than combining it with days of unrelated exploration.
The Prey for the Pack guide explains the route without promising a disputed exact countdown. That distinction is useful across a checklist: mark known urgency even when a universal timer is not established. An objective can require immediate action without the site inventing a safe number of rests for every save.
Vocation and maister unlock chains
Optional quests can provide access to vocations or important teachings. These rewards are related but distinct, so list the class unlock and the skill reward separately when they depend on different interactions. Otherwise, a completed unlock may be mistaken for confirmation that every associated advanced skill has already been obtained.
The vocation guide summarizes the established class roster and unlock routes. The Spearhand and Magick Archer pages cover their specific NPC sequences. Keep prerequisites, equipment compatibility and Arisen-only eligibility visible when deciding whether one of these chains serves your current party plan.
Romance investigations
Wilhelmina's Every Rose Has Its Thorn is an investigation with prerequisites, evidence choices and a deadline once active. It should not be reduced to a checklist entry that says give gifts and assume the romance is complete. Track the relevant encounters, the investigation start and the actual assistance route separately.
The Wilhelmina guide covers the two evidence items, Brant's help and the three-day window. It also avoids a blanket claim that Feast of Deception always ends the quest. An individual chain's documented window is more useful than a general cutoff copied across every optional objective in the city.
The Sphinx's A Game of Wits
The Sphinx chain spans the Mountain Shrine and Frontier Shrine, with riddle-specific conditions. It needs its own progress record because the later sequence is not in one universal order. Rumination also refers to your first Seeker's Token pickup, so a personal map note can matter more than another player's route.
Use the Sphinx guide to distinguish each submission and the final confrontation. In a checklist, record completed riddles rather than merely whether you visited a shrine. That gives Recollection a usable solved total and keeps the last reward encounter separate from the spoken riddle answers.
Investigation pages for common blockers
The Caged Magistrate requires discovering a suitable library before Waldhar leaves his cell. The Nameless Village continues into hidden depths where Srail supplies evidence. These are examples of quests whose visible destination alone is not the full solution.
Open the magistrate guide or village walkthrough when one of those conditions blocks you. Track the actual prerequisite discovery or evidence item in the checklist. Marking a quest complete simply because you reached the NPC would hide the step you still need to perform.
Choice-based quests
The Arisen's Shadow has a compensation choice and a refusal route involving Brant's investigation. Those branches should not be merged into one guaranteed outcome. Record the choice you made so that the next checklist step matches your save instead of a walkthrough describing the other branch.
The Arisen's Shadow guide covers catching Bermudo with Grab and keeping the follow-up separate from the immediate payment. Similar care is useful when any quest presents an outcome-changing conversation. A checklist should identify the selected route, not just the quest's name and the fact that a conversation occurred.
Review before progression checkpoints
Before Feast of Deception and later endgame transitions, review unfinished local quests. Check active urgency, prerequisites and the outcome you want before advancing. A checkpoint review is a planning recommendation, not a claim that every listed optional chain expires at exactly that moment.
Some chains depend on earlier NPC interactions and cannot be recovered merely by visiting a final map marker. Keep those dependencies visible in your notes. If a quest has not appeared, review its documented start conditions rather than assuming every optional objective is available in every story state.
Separate ordinary-world, endgame and expansion tasks
Unmoored World evacuations belong in a distinct endgame section because the terrain and objectives change. Dark Arisen entry and its added content belong in another section rather than being mixed into an allegedly complete 2024 base-game list. The world state and owned content matter when deciding which tasks are available.
Use the Unmoored guide for the alternative endgame and the DLC guide for expansion entry. If you are already in the Unmoored World, review the another-cycle requirement before expecting the ordinary Brant expansion route to work. A checklist becomes useful when it reflects your actual progression context.
Build a checklist that answers what to do next
Record each quest's name, giver, region, prerequisites, urgency, selected branch and completion state. Add the focused guide link beside any step whose solution is more involved than a destination. This makes the list a decision tool instead of an unsupported total that combines differently classified main, side and expansion quests.
Start each session by checking urgent active objectives, then choose between story progression and optional goals you want to pursue. Revisit the list before a major transition or restart so unfinished content is a deliberate choice. This structure organizes the researched quests without inventing an exhaustive expansion count or treating every chain as equally available and equally safe to postpone.
Common questions
What should come before optional collection? Deal with known urgent rescues and active deadlines before extending a journey for collectibles. A nearby map marker does not make the time-sensitive objective safe to postpone. Use the focused quest route to finish the outcome you want, then return to optional exploration with the urgency resolved.
Can one cutoff describe every optional chain? Individual prerequisites and quest windows differ. Feast of Deception is a useful checkpoint for reviewing the journal, not proof that every side quest ends there. Track the documented conditions for the particular chain instead of converting a general progression warning into one universal rule for all NPCs.
What should be recorded beside a quest name? Add the giver, region, prerequisites, urgency, chosen branch and completion state. Include a focused guide link when the task needs an interior route or evidence rather than a broad destination. Keep base-world, Unmoored and expansion objectives separate so the checklist reflects what is actually available in your save.
