Dragon's Dogma 2 Beginner Guide

Research checked October 9, 2026 · 6 min read

Begin Dragon's Dogma 2 by creating your Arisen and Main Pawn, choosing a starting vocation and following the opening story to Vernworth. Meet Brant at the Stardrop Inn at night to establish the early investigation route. Build a party with complementary roles, deal promptly with timed rescues, and review unfinished objectives before major story transitions or a carry-over restart.

Create the Arisen and Main Pawn

Choose human or beastren and refine the appearance you want before accepting the initial design. The Main Pawn has its own character setup, so create it separately rather than assuming the Arisen's choices also define the companion. Check both designs under different lighting when making detailed cosmetic decisions.

The free Character Creator & Storage tool can prepare appearances before the full game. Use the same account and platform for the appearance import, and accept the existing-data prompt during setup. Stored designs are appearance presets rather than progressed campaigns, so the import does not supply levels, inventory or completed quests.

Treat race and later editing differently

Race deserves care because ordinary Art of Metamorphosis editing does not switch human and beastren during the current run. Substantial later appearance edits use the in-game book and a barberie, while narrower cosmetic services are separate. You do not need a real-money purchase to use the researched in-game appearance route.

The creation guide explains the starting design and import process. The appearance-change guide explains the current-run editor and its restrictions. Keep those services distinct from equipment tailoring, which changes eligible gear appearances rather than the character's face or body.

Choose a starting vocation you want to learn

Fighter, Archer, Thief and Mage are the starting choices. Choose the role that interests you rather than assuming the opening selection has to solve the entire game. You can change vocation later through the relevant guild service and pursue the separate routes for advanced classes.

The vocation roster explains the established ten base classes and their unlock context. Its pawn-eligibility distinction matters from the start: Mystic Spearhand, Magick Archer, Trickster and Warfarer are Arisen-only. A later class unlock does not automatically supply every maister teaching or the equipment needed for the new setup.

Build a party with complementary roles

A Main Pawn whose role complements the Arisen is a practical starting point. Mage is a convenient support recommendation when healing, protection or elemental assistance is useful. If the party already has that support, consider whether a frontline, ranged or damage role is the more important gap.

Hire the additional pawns around the jobs still missing from the group. A ranged Arisen may appreciate a frontline companion, while a damage-focused player may value supportive magick. The pawn guide offers eligible options by role instead of presenting one mandatory team for every character.

Follow the opening to Vernworth

The opening story leads through Gaoled Awakening, Tale's Beginning and In Dragon's Wake toward Vernworth. Use the current main objective to establish that route before treating every distant map destination as an immediate requirement. Vernworth becomes the early hub for Brant's investigations and useful services.

Visit Brant at the Stardrop Inn at night and review the available story leads. Several investigations can be handled in a flexible order, so keep a record of the ones accepted and completed. The main-story walkthrough organizes the campaign into stages rather than forcing every player into one disputed total or sequence.

Use focused guides when an objective is blocked

Some early quests require more than reaching the visible destination. The Caged Magistrate needs a discovered place with books before Waldhar agrees to leave, and the Nameless Village continues beneath the surface settlement for Srail's evidence. An NPC encounter or a surface visit is not automatically the completion condition.

Open the magistrate guide or village walkthrough when you reach those blockers. Identify the missing requirement before repeating the same conversation or map visit. Once the objective is complete, follow the report-back stage so the investigation is actually finished in the journal.

Prioritize timed rescues and active deadlines

Prey for the Pack asks you to rescue Rodge and escort him back to Morris. Go immediately rather than delaying the search for unrelated exploration, because waiting can change the outcome. The collected rescue sources disagree about a precise timer, so do not treat an unsupported number of safe rests as a guarantee.

Other chains can have their own documented windows, such as Wilhelmina's three-day evidence search once active. Use the quest index to separate urgent objectives from optional collection and main-story progression. Each quest has its own conditions, so a major checkpoint is a reason to review the journal rather than apply one universal cutoff to every chain.

Plan travel with current map information

The base-world regions are Vermund, Battahl and Agamen Volcanic Island. Separate settlement destinations, cave entrances, collectibles and travel points when planning a journey. Oxcart routes and Ferrystone destinations are different systems, and a visible road does not guarantee that every crossing is available in your current story state.

The researched June update adds fixed Portcrystals and an Eternal Ferrystone through early Brant progression. Use the travel guide to distinguish fixed points from portable placements you create yourself. If you start another story cycle, portable deployment must be rebuilt rather than assumed to remain in the old positions.

Compare equipment before upgrading it

Check vocation compatibility first for both weapons and armor. Then compare the attributes relevant to the role, including offensive qualities for weapons and defensive qualities, resistances and weight for armor. Choose the enhancement style according to the item's purpose rather than upgrading every piece at the nearest blacksmith.

Use the weapon guide and armor guide for the comparison process. Early-shop recommendations, later base-game purchases and expansion equipment belong to different progression contexts. A historical ranking is not a verified current best-in-slot list across every item added afterward.

Decide when to explore the added content

Dark Arisen requires the base game when bought as a standalone expansion. Its researched entry is Brant's nighttime conversation in Vernworth, with separate leads toward Norgan and Lost Rites. The recommended starting levels are 40 for Norgan and 20 for Lost Rites, rather than hard level locks.

Hard Mode belongs to the accompanying free update and has its own switching restrictions. If your save is already in the Unmoored World, review the another-cycle requirement before expecting ordinary expansion entry. The DLC guide and Hard Mode guide keep those ownership, progression and difficulty decisions separate.
