Sphinx: All Ten Riddle Answers and the Final Reward
Research checked October 9, 2026 · 7 min read
The Sphinx quest, A Game of Wits, begins at the Mountain Shrine and continues at the Frontier Shrine. Solve each riddle using its specific condition, record how many you have completed, and remember that the later sequence is not in one fixed order. Rumination sends you back to your first Seeker's Token location within seven days, while the final reward requires a confrontation after the riddles.
Track progress across the two shrines
The Mountain Shrine is the first location, and the Frontier Shrine is the second. Keep a record of completed riddles as you progress between them. That record matters because Recollection asks about your actual solved total, not a number copied from a walkthrough's differently ordered later sequence.
Treat every answer as a separate condition rather than assuming that one convenient item resolves the entire quest. Some riddles involve a person, some involve an item and one refers to an earlier collectible location. A short note of what you submitted and which riddle was completed helps keep those requirements distinct.
Eyes: find the Sealing Phial
Take the Sealing Phial from the chest above the indicated entrance for Eyes. The location above the entrance is the useful detail to check before searching further through the area. Keep the item rather than consuming it while you are still resolving the riddle.
An item mentioned in the riddle route can also have another use, so distinguish obtaining it from spending it. For this answer, the researched instruction is the phial from that chest. Do not substitute a different object simply because another riddle later asks for an offering.
Madness and Wisdom: choose the right pawn or person
For Madness, present your Main Pawn or an appropriate beloved. Wisdom has a more specific requirement: use a genuinely CAPCOM-created SphinxParent, SphinxFather or SphinxMother pawn. A player-created pawn with the same visible name alone does not satisfy that provenance requirement.
Check the pawn's origin instead of searching only by the name string and assuming every match is equivalent. Madness and Wisdom are different riddles even though both can involve pawns. Keep the intended submission for each one separate so that an acceptable choice for one is not automatically reused as the other answer.
Conviction: offer an item you want duplicated
Conviction asks for an offered item and can duplicate the chosen object. A valuable Portcrystal is a useful recommendation when that fits your travel plans. Choose deliberately, since the practical value of the duplication depends on which item you submit.
The Portcrystal guide explains the distinction between portable crystals and fixed destinations. That distinction helps when deciding whether an additional portable crystal serves your needs. The riddle's duplication opportunity is not evidence for an unchanging maximum count of crystals across every game version.
Rumination: return to your first token
Return to the location where you picked up your first Seeker's Token and retrieve the Finder's Token within seven days. The required place is personal to your playthrough. A map showing another player's first pickup is not automatically the answer for your save.
Record your first token as soon as you collect it, ideally using a screenshot and map pin. If you are already solving Rumination, use your own remembered route and collection notes to identify the location. The token guide separates this first-pickup requirement from general token collection targets.
Reunion: locate the Frontier Shrine
Reunion requires finding the Frontier Shrine. This moves the quest into its second-location context rather than providing another item submission at the first shrine. Keep the location change in your progress notes so you know which stage you are following.
The later riddles do not follow a single universal order. Compare the riddle actually presented in your game with its answer below, rather than assuming the next entry in a numbered video must be yours. This is particularly important for the running count used in Recollection.
Differentiation and Recollection
For Differentiation, bring the correct twin, Dante or Vergil, matching the image shown. The image decides which person is required. Do not select the twin merely from a remembered name in someone else's playthrough when your current presentation points to the other one.
For Recollection, present the number of statues that matches the riddles already solved at that moment. Use your own completed-riddle record rather than a fixed answer borrowed from a different order. These two riddles test different observations: one compares appearance, while the other checks your current quest history.
Contest and Futility
Contest requires defeating the opponent despite the imposed combat restriction. The researched walkthroughs describe carrying and throwing him as an available approach. Treat it as a way to handle that specific restricted encounter, not as a universal requirement for every ordinary fight.
For Futility, bring Maurits to the fragile jar instead of risking a long journey carrying the jar itself. This answers the transport problem through moving the person. Keep the jar protected and follow the relevant submission rather than assuming the only solution is to carry the fragile object across the world.
Quick riddle reference
Use this table to locate the condition for the riddle currently presented. The entries summarize the researched solutions rather than defining one compulsory later order. Check your own progress for Rumination and Recollection before submitting an answer.
| Riddle | Answer to check |
|---|---|
| Eyes | Sealing Phial above the indicated entrance |
| Madness | Main Pawn or appropriate beloved |
| Wisdom | A genuine CAPCOM SphinxParent, SphinxFather or SphinxMother |
| Conviction | An item you want duplicated |
| Rumination | Finder's Token at your first pickup, within seven days |
| Reunion | Find the Frontier Shrine |
| Differentiation | The twin matching the shown image |
| Recollection | Statues matching your actual solved-riddle total |
| Contest | Defeat the restricted opponent; carrying and throwing is an option |
| Futility | Bring Maurits to the fragile jar |
The final confrontation and Eternal Wakestone
After the riddles, the final reward requires confronting the Sphinx. The guides describe an Archer using an Unmaking Arrow on the beast's body rather than its human face. Check the current save warnings before firing, and treat this as a distinct final encounter rather than another riddle submission.
Obtain the final key and Eternal Wakestone through that conclusion. The Eternal Wakestone is not the same as an ordinary single-person Wakestone. Keep the target area, save warning and reward distinction clear rather than assuming that finishing the last spoken riddle automatically supplies every final reward.
Common questions
Can another player's first-token map solve Rumination for me? Rumination refers to your own first Seeker's Token pickup. A different player's initial location is useful only if it matches the history of your save. Record that first pickup and return there for the Finder's Token within the researched seven-day window rather than substituting a generic convenient token location.
Is Recollection always the same statue total? The required statues match the riddles already solved at that moment. The later riddle sequence is not in one fixed universal order, so a number from another route may not apply. Use your own completed-riddle record and the current question before submitting the answer.
Does finishing the spoken riddles automatically give the final reward? The final reward also requires confronting the Sphinx and obtaining the final key. The researched arrow approach targets the beast's body rather than its human face, with current save warnings checked before firing. Keep that encounter and the Eternal Wakestone distinct from an ordinary riddle submission or a single-person Wakestone.
