Woodland Wordsmith: Elvish Translation and Pawn Tome

Research checked October 11, 2026 · 2 min read

Woodland Wordsmith is a pawn specialization that lets the party understand Elvish. You can recruit a pawn who already has it, or obtain a tome to teach your Main Pawn. It is separate from combat vocation and inclination.

The quickest translation option

If you only need to understand Sacred Arbor's residents now, inspect recruitable pawns for Woodland Wordsmith. Bring one with the specialization into your active party. This avoids waiting for a tome before your first conversations in the settlement.

Where to seek the tome

Kough, the innkeeper in Sacred Arbor, is a documented source of Woodland Wordsmith's Tome. Grisha in the same settlement is another reported source. Choose one resident and build affinity through gifts rather than searching for a random chest.

Give gifts across separate days

Flowers are a practical gift option for Kough. Published accounts describe repeated daily gifts over roughly two or three in-game days, followed by another conversation. Treat that as an observed route, not a guaranteed timer for every save; check whether the gift is accepted and return later.

Teach your Main Pawn

After receiving Woodland Wordsmith's Tome, use it to teach your Main Pawn the specialization. Check your pawn's details afterwards to confirm it is active. Teaching another specialization replaces the current one, so make the choice before consuming the item.

Vocation is a different setting

A Mage or Fighter can provide translation if they have Woodland Wordsmith. Changing combat vocation is therefore not the step that teaches Elvish. Use pawn role planning for combat coverage and decide separately which party member should handle translation.

If Elvish is still unreadable

Inspect the active party instead of relying on a pawn you dismissed earlier. Confirm the specialization has not been replaced by another tome. If your Main Pawn no longer has it, recruiting another translator is a useful immediate option while you seek a replacement teaching item.

Plan gifts around timed quests

Gather flowers during ordinary exploration and return when it fits your route. Do not pass several days purely for affinity while an urgent rescue is running. The quest planning guide and world map guide help organize the trip without confusing pawn abilities with travel objectives.
